About the Author
C Michaels considers himself an average Joe who grew up inspired by larger-than-life heroes like James Bond, Batman, and Captain America. As a lifelong fan, he felt a deep connection to these icons, but over time, he grew frustrated with how they were portrayed in modern media. Instead of complaining, Michaels acted. He set out to create his own hero, one who embodied the grit, determination, and spirit that first drew him to his childhood favorites.
That decision led to the birth of Mickey Hook, a tough yet relatable private detective navigating the crime-ridden streets of Queen City. Inspired by 1930s noir and pulp fiction, Michaels envisioned a world that felt both familiar and unique. Loosely based on his hometown of Charlotte, NC, Queen City draws from the history of organized crime in cities like Chicago and New York, capturing the danger and intrigue of their notorious pasts. The result is a gritty, atmospheric setting where shadows lurk on every corner and justice is anything but guaranteed.
Michaels’ work is a tribute to the hard-boiled detective genre, drawing inspiration from legends like Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe, and Mike Hammer. His writing delivers the kinds of stories he wants to read, hard-hitting, thrilling, and filled with femme fatales and relentless danger. Beyond the stories themselves, Michaels has a deep admiration for the style of the times, the gritty elegance of noir films, the raw storytelling of old pulp magazines, and the immersive drama of old-time radio shows that kept listeners hooked.
When he’s not writing, Michaels immerses himself in classic pulp fiction, listens to Frank Sinatra, and explores the legacy of the genres and characters that shaped his storytelling.
